Riding Through Vipava Valley, Slovenia!

In the heart of Vipava Valley (a cool ride from Nova Gorica in the West, all along the 444/4xx roads towards Postojna). Slovenia is well known for its’ Merlots, apparently.

Clockwise from Top-Left: barrels!; Masceration tanks; their range of wine; and free non-alcoholic grape juice for me to down that was SOOO naturally sweet like you wouldn’t believe!! Not for sale, sadly! πŸ˜€

Some fun things I learnt:
*Wine-making season starts in September (doh!) ;P
*Workers start at 6am;
*Only pick for 5 hours to avoid midday heat damaging the picked crops;
*22-hour work day!
*January is the only month off!
*Masceration & how red wine is red from the pigment of the grape skins;
*The optimum for the grapes in that region should be ~16 Degrees C. Red grapes are mascerated at 18C & for a few more hours;
*A young wine is a few months old;
*Though you can gauge within 2hrs if a wine will mature into a great one or not.
*Hmm, could be figurative for my love life, too:….what I thought was sweet ain’t sweet ;P

From Bled to Nova Gorica…

Great, great day on Wednesday!! Parked just by what appears to be a logging operation on the 404, my baby high above clouds as a first! It was SURREAL!! πŸ˜€

20140823-100215.jpg

Without sounding like Henry Cole from ‘World’s Greatest M/C Rides’, this was one of the sweetest roads I’ve ever been on!!

Notes: 404, 403, 607, 609 & 608 from Bled to Nova Gorica.

1st/2nd gears only, sweeping S-bends, straight lines in a series of bends, visual point work, hairpins, throwing my weight round. Heaven! :D. A pretty fun 44 miles with 3.66L fuel used/5 Euro top-up. So worth it!

Walking Round Lake Bled…

What started as a chillax-ed stroll turned into walking round the ~6km of Lake Bled ending in night fall – balancing-out my carbon emission guilt, I guess (even though my baby is quite green) πŸ˜‰

Vrőič Pass, Slovenia!

At the top whilst riding the VrΕ‘ič Pass through Triglav National Park, the other day! πŸ™‚

Hairpin heaven if you’re a fan! πŸ˜‰

Kept the bike in 1st gear pretty much and looked over my shoulder to see where I wanted to go. – A lot like U-Turns! :D. Watched the heavier touring bikes being thrown about by their riders so effortlessly and confidently was awe-inspiring. πŸ™‚

Lake Bled, Slovenia!

After 936 miles & 2 whole days, I made it to Slovenia!! This is Lake Bled. πŸ˜€

Saturday was the best progress where I did 477 miles in one day (maybe a personal best). More pics to come but there’s some rainy days ahead up to Thursday and I’m not sure how good wifi is here or there but will try!! πŸ˜€

Leaving Day from Dubrovnik, Croatia

Seeing as my baby helped me achieve the goal of getting me to Dubrovnik, it’d be wrong not to include a pic of her and me together with the town behind us πŸ™‚ This was taken on departure day, Sunday 9th.

Escape to Lokrum Island, Dubrovnik

The last day in Dubrovnik and chose to go to nearby Lokrum Island. I was too late getting an early boat to Mljet, unfortunately.

The great thing about Lokrum is that it allowed me to escape the many tourists off the mainland yet is so near (~15 minute boat ride). It inadvertently marked the 4th UNESCO site of my trip. …It also has a nudists’ beach πŸ˜‰

Finally in Dubrovnik, Croatia by Motorcycle!

After 1721 miles and a very leisurely 15-day journey making my way all along the D8 coastal road, I arrived in Dubrovnik on Thursday 6th!! πŸ™‚

Pic of me overlooking the ~2km fort wall in this post…Man, I look naked without my bike! πŸ™‚

A mixture of feelings: excitement, enjoyment, no overly sense of accomplishment (as it’s not a ‘Round-The-World’ trip) but definitely satisfaction. Loving the sunshine. Not loving the huge influx of tourists in the mornings ;). It’s been about a year since I wanted to so this trip on a bike and about 2 years since I wanted to visit Croatia.

The bike, getting my license aged 31, impending adventures and what this blog has been realigned for, has and still remains one of the best decisions I ever made. If I sit back and look at it, I’ve visited 5 or 6 major towns and cities of Croatia in what must’ve been a space of 10 days. …I’m not sure I would’ve had the same flexibility & cost efficiency if I were to have caught the trains (judging by the length of some of the journeys). As well as, the flexibility on being able to move on when I want.

There have been some classic bad moves and ‘lessons learnt’ made on the way. I’ve met some interesting people including a chance meeting with accomplished pianist, Ksenia Kogan in Rijeka! Sadly, no picture, but happy to recount it in full when I arrive home (and not tapping posts on an iPhone) πŸ˜‰

For now, I may take some time away from the blog. I’m definitely thinking about posting my trip on the way back to the UK. When I’m back, I can’t wait to review and share the helmet cam footage, D-SLR and iPhone pics πŸ™‚

Thank you to all who have followed over the past few days! Your support means a lot to me!

Pit Stop at Makarska, Croatia

It was motorbike jeans weather as WeatherOnline, MeteoVista et al. all predict clear, sunny weather all the way from Split to Dubrovnik on the D8 coastal road, yesterday. Q8)

‘Lonely Planet’ says the water here is crystal blue πŸ™‚
